Anxiety Sleep Disorder
Anxiety sleep disorder is a serious problem for a large number of people. A sleep disorder can result from stress, fears and anxiety that a person experiences during the day which can then occupy their mind while they’re trying to sleep at night. The more someone who suffers from this disorder tries to fall asleep , the more their brain refuses to “turn off”. This can result in sleep deprivation which can lead to car accidents, mistakes on the job and other undesirable results.
Fear and anxiety can also lead a person’s body to involuntarily tense up and be “ready for action” throughout the night. Thus even when they do sleep, their bodies are not getting the rest they need. Sleep deprivation then contributes to increased levels of anxiety during the day.
Fortunately there are six very effective methods for treatment of anxiety sleep disorder:
1. Avoid caffeine and sugar
Coffee, soft drinks and chocolate are examples of things which should be avoided in the evenings. These can increase the tension in your body and keep it on “high alert” making sleep even more difficult.
2. Exercise
Energy levels can be brought down by vigorous exercise such as running, swimming or aerobics. Care should be taken however as in the short term exercise actually invigorates the body, so this should be done at least three hours before it is time to go to sleep. After the initial effect of being “pumped” by the exercise wears off, the body is then more ready to relax and go to sleep, before anxiety and fear have a chance to creep into your mind.
3. Hypnotherapy
Many people have had success with hypnosis as a method of alleviating sleep disorders. This can help to train the mind to fall asleep when certain triggers are present, such as soft music or a recording of the hypnotist’s voice. This gives the mind something to focus on rather than the fear and anxiety which is preventing sleep.
4. Meditation
Try attending a couple of Yoga sessions to learn the basics of proper breathing and correct meditation techniques. This helps to calm a person’s mind and slow down their heart rate, which helps to reduce tension and lead the body into restful sleep.
5. Herbal and Vitamin Supplements
Two herbal supplements which are known as natural sleep aids are chamomile tea and valerian. They can help to calm your anxiety naturally. Vitamin B and Vitamin E both have the same affect, and are an excellent alternative to anxiety sleep disorder treatments and medications.
6. Medication
This method should be used cautiously, and only when the other methods don’t work. Since medication can lead to chemical dependency, it should be viewed as a short-term solution, and only done under your doctor’s supervision. This should be done in conjunction with some form of therapy to deal with your fears on a more long term basis.
These are just a few of the many alternative anxiety sleep disorder treatments available. A licensed therapist could recommend additional treatments. It is important to take some action regarding this problem as long term it can lead to severe sleep deprivation, which can result in personality changes, weakened immune system and even heart attack or stroke.
